Ah, yes. The water versus toilet paper argument. Well, as far as I am concerned, water wins hands-down: it’s cleaner, more eco-friendly and, well, it’s water. No toilet paper fragrance or chemicals touching your bum. This is an icky but necessary topic to talk about. And when you’re looking for an eco-friendly portable option, a bidet is your best friend for after-activity cleaning. But start simple, if you’re terrified (I was). Try a portable bidet at home before you travel. They’re way cheaper, lightweight, and less intimidating. Now, what is the best portable bidet? How do you use a portable bidet? This post answers your most burning questions.
Want a quick tl;dr? After checking out several different options, the best options are the Boss Bidet Mini, the Toto Portable Travel Washlet and the MyPortaWash Handheld Bidet.
Best Travel Bidet
Why you need a portable travel bidet: So, apparently toilet paper doesn’t clean you as well as a bidet. This can lead to hemorrhoids and something pleasant called itchy anus. So that’s one aspect of it.
Another aspect is with respect to the environment. If you have seen our post on eco-friendly toilet paper options, then you’ll know that toilet paper is bad for the environment. Fifteen million trees are chopped down for our toilet paper requirements every year. Out of these, we flush around 30,000 trees down the toilet every day. If you’re wondering about the life cycle analysis, the bidet uses one-eighth of a gallon of water, while it takes about 37 gallons of water to make one roll of toilet paper. Why contribute to this when we can use water?
It’s cheaper in the long run, too. Americans spend $40 to $70 a year on toilet paper, on average. With a bidet, you buy it once and keep using it until it breaks down (which is likely only after several years).
But do you still need to wipe with a bidet? Well only with a clean towel in order to dry yourself down there. You’ll feel so fresh and clean, you won’t know why you stuck with TP for so long!
Bidets have been used for ages in many parts of the world, and they seem none the worse for it, so let’s put aside our apprehensions and look at some portable bidet options!

Another crowdfunded portable bidet project, the Sonny portable bidet also has an antibacterial nozzle – but this one’s interchangeable. Frequently Asked Questions
1 / What is a Bidet?
A bidet is a device that sprays water on your, ahem, private parts to clean you up. The key point is that it uses water – basically sprays water wherever you aim at – and the fancier bidet models have an angled nozzle and can spray water of varying temperatures and dry you up afterwards. Maybe they even spray some perfume to round it off, who knows. But this post isn’t talking about the fancy models. And what you need to know right now is that bidets are more hygienic than using toilet paper – and is very…umm…reassuring for women especially during their period.
2 / What is a Portable Bidet?
It’s a bidet that’s portable. It isn’t fixed to your toilet or your bathroom wall. You can take it with you when you travel, go camping, etc – it fits right into your travel bag. It’s got a container for housing the water, and a spraying/nozzle mechanism, and is available in battery-operated electric versions and squeezable non-electric versions.
3 / How Do You Use a Portable Bidet?
Sigh. I knew I’d have to tackle this question. You can check out numerous websites that go into detail regarding this activity – or, suffice to say, you point and spray. You’re basically washing your parts clean, and while you do develop a personal skill (justy like wiping with toilet paper), it’s definitely isn’t rocket science. Obviously.
The thing with the portable bidet is that you’ll need to fill up the container with water (unlike a seat bidet that connects to your toilet plumbing system). Look, here’s a fun video that makes it super obvious how you need to use it:
4 / How to Select the Right Portable Bidet?
When selecting the right portable bidet for your travel needs, consider the following factors:
1 // Size
How much water, how big a spray, etc have to be considered for your specific needs.
2 // Nozzle
How much of a yoga stretch and bend do you need to do in order to aim accurately? Some bidets come with extra-long nozzles in case you need them.
3 // Price
There’s a range of prices which corresponds to how simple or fancy the portable bidet is. Are you okay with a squeezy bottle that you manually operate? Or do you want an electric bidet with various pressure settings, bidet attachments, and other bells and whistles?
4 // Manual or Electric
Same as above, really. The manual one is even more eco-friendly than the electric one (no batteries!), so if that’s important to you, then go for the manual option. However, if you’re camping in a cold place, I’m sure you’d love some warm water hitting your tender parts. In that case, battery-operated ones are ideal.

Those were some options for portable bidets. I hope they were helpful in getting you interested in trying out a bidet, if not fully enthusiastic about the amount of TP you will save!
