Yoga has just exploded in the last decade or so. While it undoubtedly brings a lot of improvement to your physical and mental health, it’s also a key factor in more people getting more bendy. I mean, I’ve been super flexible as a teenager, but I put on a lot of weight in my twenties, and ended up not understanding what was going on with my body. Why couldn’t I bend and twist anymore? Well, it was yoga that came to the rescue. This gentle practice has held numerous people’s hands and led them to greater health and fitness. I’m one of them, and I cannot recommend yoga enough.
Another thing I cannot recommend enough of? Wearing the right clothing for your yoga practice. This ain’t the time to be adjusting the elastic band or tightening up the drawstrings. Leggings are ideal for yoga, because they stretch along with you and come back into position along with you. The right pair of leggings will let you forget your clothing and focus on your body. They will aid free movement, and relieve you of any discomfort while you let your body stretch to its ideal levels. Bonus? They can be worn for yoga, but also for running, hiking, or just hanging out in your living room.
My Yoga Wear Isn’t Sustainable?
Conventional yoga wear, like most activewear, is made primarily with polyester and nylon, which are basically forms of plastic. And, unfortunately, the simple act of washing them can cause pollution and other downstream effects on the oceans. Non-biodegradable microplastic fibers are shed from such clothing, and are causing massive damage around the world.

Enter Eco-friendly Alternatives
Eco friendly yoga clothes made of sustainable, natural fabrics. Ethical yoga clothing, basically. In the absence of which, look for secondhand / recycled /upcycled clothing.
Psst: Is you currently have synthetic yoga wear, don’t toss them out. Continue to use them until they can no longer be used. But to prevent microfibres from being released during washing, use the Guppyfriend Washing Bag which can filter microfibres and prevent them from flowing into the water system.

Sustainable Yoga Wear for a Mindful Practice
In general, when you’re on the lookout for sustainable organic clothing for yoga, look for certifications. But, keep reading – we’ve done all the hard work for you, and shortlisted some epic sustainable yoga brands!
1 // ADAY
ADAY creates high-quality pieces that will last a long, long time. They sources fabrics from Oeko-tex and Bluesign approved factories, and also use recycled fabrics like ECOYNL and post-consumer plastic bottles.
This pair of Throw & Roll leggings below costs a pretty penny, but is comfortable, flattering, and lasts a long time!

2 // Girlfriend Collective
Girlfriend Collective’s leggings are the highlight – they’re comfortable and fit snug, and made from recycled polyester fabric. Now, you may wonder: will these polyester leggings discard microplactics when washing? Well, they have a portable Wash Bag that prevents exactly that: capture microfibers and keep them from entering water streams. “Because clean clothes shouldn’t equal a dirty ocean.”
These seamless high-rise leggings below are made of a super-soft fabric made from recycled fishing nets.
3 // Organic Basics
This Danish brand uses top-quality organic cotton and other ecologically friendly fibers for their products. They also use recycled nylon and wool. They make it a point to work with factories that are Oeko-tex- or GOTS-certified (or other reviewed third-party certifications by respected authorities).
These full-length Active Leggings are made from recycled materials.
4 // PACT
PACT has been listed in this blog several times for their active wear. PACT sources 100% organic cotton and produces all their items in a Fair Trade Certified factory. They do not use any toxic dyes. One advantage this brand has over the others: it’s much more suited for smaller budgets!
Their organic leggings and tights (below) are the perfect outfit for yoga!

5 // Patagonia
Patagonia uses organic cotton, Tencel® and hemp for several of their products. Their leggings, however, use a polyester/spandex blend. Perhaps to make up for that, they use Bluesign® approved fabric and a finished product that’s Fair Trade Certified™ sewn.
Check out their leggings here.
6 // Picture Organic Clothing
Picture designs their products from cradle to grave. They are mindful of the entire life cycle of the product, including recyclability, and proper disposal. They are transparent about the factories they work with, and keep customers updated on the supply chain.
These tech leggings are ideal for colder weather yoga sessions, and are made of recycled polyester and elastane. They have a carbon footprint calculator that can trace your own carbon impact when you buy Picture!
7 // Prana
Prana focuses on yoga and activewear. Their products are made from sustainable materials such as organic cotton and recycled wool. They are extremely conscious about their supply chain, and work only with Fair Trade Certified factories.
Prana has an excellent selection of yoga pants.
8 // Threads 4 Thought
Another affordable brand that is prioritizing the environment. Threads 4 Thought makes ethical and sustainable activewear from organic cotton, recycled polyester and Lenzing Modal. The brand donates their profits to the International Rescue Committee.
Their ReActive Leggings are activewear made from recycled plastic bottles. Each pair is “made with at least 35 plastic bottles, putting that plastic waste to use and keeping it from polluting our oceans.”
9 // Vege Threads
Vege Threads has a stunning collection of sustainable yoga apparel made from organic cotton and lycra. Vege Threads’ signature colors are dyed with low toxic dyes in Melbourne, Australia and their indigo and multi-dyed skews are dyed with plant-based dyes in Bali.
The brand’s organic yoga collection, as well as all their other products, are made in Melbourne in an ethical clothing-accredited facility in Australia.
10 // Vyayama
This is a tongue-twister. VYAYAMA is pronounced ‘vai-ah’mah’ is a 3000 year old Sanskrit word meaning ‘to move’ and ‘to tame the inner breath’.
Vyayama makes their yoga products with natural, earth-friendly fabrics (such as include TENCEL, CUPRO, Micromodal, and wool), instead of synthetic fibers. Their custom-designed fabrics are knitted and their garments are produced in the same location – to reduce their carbon footprint.
They have some unique prints on their leggings.

Amazing list!! Thank you so much for taking the time to write about this, it can be difficult to find the right brands in the sea of greenwashing… I personally really love pranavidastyle.com, it’s a small business, everything made in Canada. Amelia, the owner, is one of the most genuine people I know <3 and the pants are the most comfortable pants I've worn, and I'm not even exaggerating. Let me know if you try them out!!
Thank you so much! I’ll try them out soon:) Thanks for stopping by!
