What Are the Benefits of Organic Clothing for Babies?
While many parents are very concerned with what to put into their baby’s mouth, sippy cups and all, most don’t really think about organic clothing in general.
What is Organic Clothing?
’Organic’ clothing refers to clothing that has been grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Most of it comes from the likes of organic pastures, grass fields and other areas where crops are allowed to grow naturally without any interference from humans or other living things. In such cases, crops are harvested in large numbers (up to thousands of pounds) and then inspected for toxicity and other potential hazards. If the crops have not been treated with pesticides or chemicals, then they are said to be organic. The US Department of Agriculture is one of the top certifiers of organic crops.
Dyes in Organic Textiles
One issue with organic clothing for babies is that these products can contain traces of dyes, which can be toxic to young children. Organic cotton can contain more dyes than conventional cotton, and these dyes can react with the skin of a baby, causing rashes and possible scarring. Fortunately, there are methods that can reduce the amount of dyes used in clothing so that it is safer for babies. These methods involve bleaching (which leaves the cotton with a lighter color), using water-based colors, and avoiding certain chemical additives and pesticides. Additionally, the FDA has approved some new dyes that were developed to provide a greener alternative to traditional dyes.
Allergens in Organic Textiles
Some babies may be allergic to certain flame retardants, which may have been used depending on the type of textile. It is a good idea to read the labels on all of the clothes that you buy. It is also important to check out the fiber content: if the fiber is too fine, it doesn’t allow the child to get air flow, which can cause overheating.
