Sustainable Home Decor Brands – Europe
Sustainability is now a basic requirement in our mind, and is redefining how we decorate our home. We dug into brands in Europe (and struggled with some language issues), and put together this list below. These eco-friendly brands not only craft gorgeous decor, but strive to leave a better world, through longer-lasting products, responsible manufacturing, and a lower carbon footprint while doing it all.
1 // EcoFurn | Finland
Price: From €149
Recyclable | FSC-certified | flat-packed
Products: Traditionally-made Nordic furniture
EcoFurn designs products that minimize impact on the environment. Their products – made from wood, hemp and metal – are fully recyclable. They follow traditional Nordic techniques, and make sure each piece is durable and stylish.
2 // HOUE | Denmark
Price: From €119
Recycled materials | award-winning | EU Ecolabel
Products: Indoor & outdoor design furniture
Houe brings affordable luxury through recycled plastics and sustainable materials (such as metal and bamboo). They updated the ethos of contemporary Scandinavian design and have won awards for sustainable innovation.
Houe encourages everyone to recycle their household plastic, thus promoting an ecological conscience. Their own furniture is created from recycled everyday household plastic trash.
3 // ferm LIVING | Denmark
Price: From €79
Cradle-to-grave approach | ethical sourcing | sustainable production
Products: Home decor, furniture, textiles, accessories
Ferm Living’s product range has been designed with a cradle-to-grave perspective. They’re a growing company still, and admit to not being perfect yet. However, their emphasis on continuous improvement – especially of their eco-conscious practices – present the right approach to the production of eco-friendly home decor.
4 // Libeco | Belgium
Price: From $110
GOTS-certified | fair trade | carbon neutral | zero waste production
Products: Linen products
Libeco is a leader in linen products, with a history spanning over a century and a half (from 1858!). They prioritize one of our favorite qualities in any product: longevity. Their Belgian linen products are crafted to last for a long time, and are stylish without being trendy.
Libeco works with CO2logic to reduce its environmental footprint through the use of green electricity, LED lighting, solar panels, etc.
5 // Ekomia | Germany
Price: From €700
Organic wood | recycled packaging | reduced carbon emissions | vegan-friendly
Products: Furniture, bedding
Berlin-based Ekomia uses organic wood to make durable (and gorgeous!) furniture pieces. They also work to prevent any unnecessary waste, be it in their packaging (recycled paper and cardboard), or the transportation carbon emissions. One of their projects is a reforesting exercise with Atmosfair.
Ekomia also has a line of DIY products.
6 // Mater | Denmark
Price: From €240
Take-back program | circularity | ethical production
Products: Furniture, lighting, accessories
Copenhagen-founded brand Mater loves recycling and reusing! Their furniture is created from waste materials (you wouldn’t believe it, though!). They especially like to use single-use materials that have been rescued from the landfill. Waste materials they use include discarded fishing nets, mango wood, and recycled car components and bicycle wheels. True to their love for repurposing, they have a takeback program
7 // ecoBirdy | Belgium

Recycled materials | fair labor | responsible production | circularity

ecoBirdy makes colorful furniture from discarded plastic toys. The new pieces are stylish, easy to maintain, and have removed plastic waste from the landfill! They have a kids’ furniture collection that’s made entirely from European recycled plastic waste. Talk about local sourcing;)
ecoBirdy also does a great job of educating kids about the circular economy, through a storybook and a school program, and inspiring them to be part of a sustainable future.

Non Toxic Home Decor: How to Select
The whole point of opting for sustainable home decor is because it’s better for us and for the environment. This also means it is non toxic. But, if you are out there in the wild (of the furniture market), how would you go about determining what is non-toxic and what isn’t?
Here are some guidelines:
1 / Material
What material is being used? Lean towards brands that use natural materials (wood, stone, clay, glass, organic cotton), rather than man-made materials such as plastic and other synthetics.
2 / Recycle / Reuse
Does the brand use recycled and/or reclaimed materials? Using materials that have already been extracted from the earth is much more sustainable than using virgin materials.
3 / Certification
For virgin wood, is the wood certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)? It’s a pretty safe (not foolproof) indication of the use of sustainable forestry wood.
4 / Ethics
How are the brand’s manufacturing processes? Do they have a transparent supply chain, and follow fair labor principles?
5 / Design
What are the brand’s design principles? Do they design for quality, functionality, and longevity? These are the three most important factors in home decor.
6 / Circularity
Finally, circularity. On this blog, we are big on looking at the full lifecycle of all products. To not have your home decor end up in the landfill at the end of its useful life, it’s best to go with brands that take care of that for you. So…does the brand have a recycling program? Or, a collection program for responsible disposal? It’s very rare right now for home decor brands to offer this, but ask anyway!
Eco-friendly Home Decor Ideas
You don’t have to buy new expensive products (or go to Europe and shop these brands!) to build a more eco-friendly home. You can try to enhance your existing space with eco-friendly options. These ideas may help:
1 // Bring in Houseplants
Mood-booster and decor elevator! Houseplants are known to have a variety of positive effects on you, but in this case, they can add a colorful break from your gray bedroom’s visual monotony.
2 // Change Your Walls
Soothing eco-friendly wall paint, stylish non-toxic wallpaper – you have some difficult choices to make! But changing the walls can change the entire mood of the place, and if you can do it in an eco-friendly way, that would be perfect.
3 // Use Energy-efficient Lighting
Light is another important element that affects our mood. You can style your lighting the way you see fit for your space, but make sure the lights themselves are energy-efficient. Your wallet will thank you.
4 // Fix Your Sleep
Of course you need to get your sleep schedule in order, but one thing that will help is organic bedding. An organic mattress wouldn’t hurt, either.
5 // Buy Local
Whatever you choose to do, though, try to support local businesses. This post covers European brands, and although some of them do have branches across the world, it’s not the ideal option if you’re from Asia or the Americas. Find more local brands that are making eco-friendly lifestyle products, and buy from them. You’ll find many options on this very website!;)
