They also make the perfect gift and are ideal as stocking fillers too!
Keep Your Feet Warm: Ethical Socks for Winter
This winter is expected to be bad, so let’s just focus on making the indoors as comfy as possible. Get an eco-friendly heater, eco-friendly slippers, a cozy organic comforter and fair trade sweaters. Check out these 16 awesome ethical sock brands (in alphabetical order, as always):
1 // ALLBIRDS
Their socks are made from environmentally-friendly and renewable materials, including Tencel, recycled polyester and recycled nylon. They have socks made from Merino wool, so watch out for that if you’d rather not buy socks made from animal products.
2 // BOODY
They make certified organic bamboo socks in various fits and cuts and colors, and are Oeko-Tex 100-certified and WRAP-certified.
3 // CONSCIOUS STEP
Vegan-certified socks made in India, these geometrically patterned socks are built from a blend of GOTS-certified Fair-Trade certified organic cotton, elastane, and polyamide. Check out their Socks That Plant Trees and Socks That Protect Turtles.
4 // GIRLFRIEND COLLECTIVE
Earlier this year, Girlfriend Collective released Everyday GF, and socks are included in this collection. The socks are made from recycled plastic bottles. And not just that, you can use your Everyday GF socks until they wear out, and then mail them back to Girlfriend Collective to be recycled into new pairs (this program is in partnership with Unifi.) How cool is that!
5 // HARVEST & MILL
Their very earthy-looking socks are made from natural, undyed, and unbleached fibre. The dyed pieces are made with natural dye by US dye artists. In addition, all of their packaging is compostable!
6 // KIND SOCKS
Colorful and ethical socks? Perfection! These socks are made from 98 percent GOTS-certified organic cotton, and the company follows ethical practices in its supply chain.
7 // LOS ANGELES APPAREL
This employee-owned company uses environmentally friendly grown cotton or organic cotton, as well as recycled or reclaimed cotton. They recycle most of their waste, and employ environmentally friendly dyeing and finishing processes.
8 // MANRAGS
Looking for ethical men’s socks? Manrags’ socks are ethically made from 100% Egyptian cotton in Egypt. They have a sock subscription program – which I’m not so sure about – that you can check out here. They’re saved quite a lot of textile waste from the landfill, so their business model seems to be making a difference.
9 // ORGANIC BASICS
This brand makes ethically-produced, high-quality organic cotton socks that look basic but feel luxurious and cozy. The catch? They only make socks in basic colors. Which is fine; we can forget about prints and patterns and simply revel in the feel.
10 // OSOM
Socks made from upcycled and recycled materials, using a waterless and dye-free process. It’s really interesting – check out their process in this video:
11 // PACT APPAREL
Organic cotton blend socks made of 73-78% GOTS-certified organic cotton and nylon and elastane for stretch. PACT socks are made using GOTS-certified organic cotton and are produced in a Fair-Trade certified factory.
12 // PEOPLE TREE
People Tree used to have one ankle-length sock style, and for variety they offered it in three different colors. But now they’ve upped their game. Check out their super cute (and comfy-looking) options! The socks are made of Fair-Trade certified GOTS-certified organic cotton.
13 // QNOOP
Yeah, how do you pronounce this word? Anyway, Qnoop offers a range of sustainable organic cotton socks in a range of colors and styles.
14 // SOLMATE SOCKS
Producing socks in a range of patterns and sizes – that look like they’d be super cozy! – Solmate is a Certified B Corporation and ethical company that treats their employees well. All their products are knit from pre-consumer, recycled cotton yarn.
15 // SWEDISH STOCKINGS
Sustainable pantyhose! Wait, what? We don’t know when we will go to a formal event next, but we can certainly be prepared with ethically made pantyhose! Swedish Stockings create their pantyhose from pre and post-consumer nylon waste through an efficient recycling procedure that reduces energy and water consumption. They also have a recycling program.
16 // THOUGHT CLOTHING
Unique socks made from certified organic cotton, bamboo viscose and recycled polyester. They have an entire section on their website dedicated to socks, so you have a lot of options.

These are some of the most sustainable, ethically produced socks in the market. Do note that just because they’re more eco-friendly than others, it doesn’t mean they’re ideal by themselves; they’re just better than the alternatives. None of these, for instance, are biodegradable socks. Not all of them offer the option of recycling. So…it’s all a work in progress.
The best option, always, is to not buy anything new. Buy pre-owned items, although buying pre-owned socks seems a bit icky, I’ll admit. The second-best option? Buy sustainably and ethically made socks, from the brands on this list. Buy from companies (preferably local businesses) that care for and protect the environment, as much as possible.
