I’m a bit worried about my sleep situation. I used to have trouble falling asleep, but then I managed to get a handle on that. I began to sleep really well, for about seven hours each night. My next focus was on what I slept in. Organic pajamas, check. I became obsessed with organic bedding. I’d gone into a frenzy of research a couple of years ago, learning about organic, fair trade bedding brands, and had even decided to start my own organic linen company. (Ahem, suffice it to say that the company hasn’t yet materialized. But I have not given up on the idea yet!)
In the post on toxins in our furniture, I’d written about the common toxic substances found in our homes, especially in our bedrooms. Considering we spend a major chunk of our time there (between six to eight hours every day (16 hours if you’re my cat)), it seems very important to make sure we are using the safest of items in our bedroom. This not only includes cleaning products, which we have covered here, but also the conventional bedroom items such as the bed, the mattress, the linen, and everything we nestle into when we hit the sack.
Don’t forget your furry friends! Check out our post on the best eco friendly dog bed. Many of the brands listed in this post show up in that, as well.
Where to Buy Fair Trade Bedding?
Fair trade bedding refers to bedding products that are produced and traded in a way that promotes ethical and sustainable practices. We know the goal of fair trade is to ensure that workers involved in the production process receive fair wages, work in safe conditions, and that environmental standards are met. Fair trade also emphasizes transparency in the supply chain and often involves partnerships with communities in developing countries.
But how do we identify fair trade bedding brands? Follow these steps:
- Look for Fair Trade Certification: Many fair trade products, including bedding, are certified by organizations such as Fair Trade International. Check for labels or certifications on the packaging that indicate the product meets fair trade standards.
- Research Brands: Investigate and research bedding brands to see if they have a commitment to fair trade practices. Visit their websites, read about their manufacturing processes, and look for information about their commitment to ethical sourcing.
- Check for Membership in Fair Trade Organizations: Some brands may be members of fair trade organizations or initiatives. Look for affiliations with groups like Fair Trade USA or the World Fair Trade Organization.
- Review Social and Environmental Policies: Check the brand’s social and environmental policies. Brands that prioritize fair trade practices often have detailed information about their commitment to workers’ rights, fair wages, and environmental sustainability.
- Customer Reviews and Ratings: Reading customer reviews can provide insights into a brand’s commitment to fair trade practices. Consumers often share their experiences and opinions about a brand’s ethical standards.
- Contact the Brand: If you can’t find sufficient information on a brand’s website, consider reaching out to them directly. Ask about their sourcing practices, commitment to fair trade, and any certifications they may have.
- Look for Transparency: Brands committed to fair trade are often transparent about their supply chain. They may provide information about the origin of their materials, the conditions of production, and their efforts to support local communities.
You can make a more informed decision when choosing bedding from brands that prioritize fair trade practices. Keep in mind that supporting fair trade helps promote social justice, ethical business practices, and sustainable production in the global marketplace.

Making the Switch to Organic Bedding
Going back to my personal discovery of the toxins in our bedroom, I was caught in a dilemma. I couldn’t afford most of the items I thought I needed. My initial step back then was to get organic pillow covers, so that I could breathe healthier. I was suffering from chronic sinusitis and had become a bit of a clean freak for a short while there (because I was convinced all the dust in the room was being breathed in by me, leading to further nasal congestion and sinusitis). I then switched over to organic sheets and covers many months later, when I could afford them.
My next step that I plan to take? To buy an organic mattress, which requires quite a bit of money. A comprehensive post by Wellness Mama on her mattress search is where which I plan to refer to when I begin my search.
My point is this: don’t assume you will have to switch over completely to organic all at once. Unless you have a small fortune tucked away for precisely this reason (?!), it isn’t easy to go out and buy all these expensive things. So take it one at a time, or if you cannot switch at all, then just focus on cleaning up your bedding items using non-toxic laundry powder and drying them out in the sun (as mentioned in this post). There’s always something you can do. There are always baby steps in place that you can take.

Disclaimer: I have tried to make a list of organic bedding brands. If any of these do not use organic textile, I will remove them from the list.

What works for others may not work for you. What works for you may not work for your friend, or your partner, or your child. My priority, when I began, was pillow cases because of my sinusitis condition. If I had had, say, a skin condition instead, I probably would have started with paying attention to the bedsheets. Do what’s best for you in your circumstances, with your particular life variables. But always do it after getting informed about the pros and cons of all of your options. Check out People for Clean Beds and read Sleep Safe in a Toxic World (primarily covering mattresses) for more details and information on what we’re all dealing with.
