Why Linen Is Ideal for Hot Days
Linen is from a plant, just like cotton is, and is therefore vegan (heh!). But linen, derived from flax, is perfect for higher temperatures, because it dries faster than cotton, is highly absorbent and a good conductor of heat. As the summer weather becomes increasingly humid in many parts of the world, these are not minor details.
There are benefits to wearing linen in the summer. Linen is soft, breathable fabric, and can keep you cool and fresh in muggy, oppressive heat. Linen helps cool your body down without the need for energy-intensive air conditioners. Of course, needing air conditioning also depends on where you are, and what the temperature exactly is, but for the most part, linen (and linen blends) is pretty much the most comfortable fabric you can wear in hotter temperatures.
Also, linen looks awesome even when it’s crumpled. So, advantage #2? You don’t need to iron your linen clothing! Why spend all that time adding extra heat to an already hot day? Just wear the freshly washed, wrinkled linen dress, and feel as comfortable as you could possibly be. Also, btw, linen gets softer and easier to handle the more it’s washed, so expect to grow more and more in love with your linen outfit as time passes!
And advantage #3? Though it is labor-intensive to manufacture – and therefore can be quite expensive – linen can last for a very long time and also retain its appearance pretty well throughout. So, buying pre-loved linen clothing (and bedding) in thrift stores is a great option! Check out if there are linen summer dresses on sale at your nearest thrift stores.:)
How Sustainable is Linen?
The main things that concern me while considering linen is whether it’s been produced in an organic and ethical manner. Is the linen dress sustainable?
Flax crops are very versatile, and are cultivated all over the world. The best quality linen are thought to be found in Western Europe (in Belgium, France and Holland). The plant is an annual crop, and takes about a hundred days from sowing to harvesting.
The awesome thing is that every part of the flax plant can be (and has been) used to create something new, i.e. nothing is wasted. Byproducts of flax crops include linseed oil (which I know from my oil painting days) and , of course, flax seeds. Flax plants are resilient, require little maintenance, and can grow in poor soil, consuming far less water than cotton. According to the UN FAO, flax uses 13 times less pesticides than potatoes (which we all eat).
Once completed, linen fabric is biodegradable, and when used untreated (without dyes), it is non toxic as heck. If you see white linen, know that it’s been bleached heavily. Since linen is naturally the color of oatmeal, known as ‘linen gray,’ any other color you see has probably been dyed. So, make sure you ask what sort of dyes have been used.
Basically, linen is among the more sustainable plants you can find. And buying quality linen outfits, and using and maintaining them well for years and years, is another way to sustainably use linen for the benefit of the environment.
