Here Are The Best Organic, Fair-Trade Bedding Brands For Non Toxic Sleep

Best Organic, Fair-Trade Bedding Brands For Non Toxic Sleep

I’m a bit worried about my sleep situation. I used to have trouble falling asleep, but then I managed to get a handle on that. I began to sleep really well, for about seven hours each night. My next focus was on what I slept in. And on. I was obsessed with organic bedding. I’d gone into a frenzy of research a couple of years ago, learning about organic, fair-trade bedding brands, and had even decided to start my own organic linen company. (Ahem, suffice it to say that the company hasn’t yet materialized. But I have not given up on the idea yet!)

In the post on toxins in our furniture, I’d written about the common toxic substances found in our homes, especially in our bedrooms. Considering we spend a major chunk of our time there (between six to eight hours every day (16 hours if you’re my cat)), it seems very important to make sure we are using the safest of items in our bedroom. This not only includes cleaning products, which we have covered here, but also the conventional bedroom items such as the bed, the mattress, the linen, and everything we nestle into when we hit the sack.

Making the Switch to Organic Bedding

Going back to my personal discovery of the toxins in our bedroom, I was caught in a dilemma. I couldn’t afford most of the items I thought I needed. My initial step back then was to get organic pillow covers, so that I could breathe healthier. I was suffering from chronic sinusitis and had become a bit of a clean freak for a short while there (because I was convinced all the dust in the room was being breathed in by me, leading to further nasal congestion and sinusitis). I then switched over to organic sheets and covers many months later, when I could afford them.

My next step that I plan to take? To buy an organic mattress, which requires quite a bit of money. Here’s a comprehensive post by Wellness Mama on her mattress search, which I plan to refer to when I begin my search.

My point is this: don’t assume you will have to switch over completely to organic all at once. Unless you have a small fortune tucked away for precisely this reason (?!), it isn’t easy to go out and buy all these expensive things. So take it one at a time, or if you cannot switch at all, then just focus on cleaning up your bedding items using non-toxic laundry powder and drying them out in the sun (as mentioned in this post). There’s always something you can do. There are always baby steps in place that you can take.

Educate Yourself on the Organic Bedding Options

What works for others may not work for you. What works for you may not work for your friend, or your partner, or your child. My priority, when I began, was pillow cases because of my sinusitis condition. If I had had, say, a skin condition instead, I probably would have started with paying attention to the bedsheets. Do what’s best for you in your circumstances, with your particular life variables. But always do it after getting informed about the pros and cons of all of your options. Check out People for Clean Beds and read Sleep Safe in a Toxic World (primarily covering mattresses) for more details and information on what we’re all dealing with. Check out this blog post, too, by one of the brands listed below (5 Organic Bedding Myths, Debunked).

Ok, after that preamble, let’s get down to the list of top organic bedding brands to help you get a good, restful night’s sleep.

Disclaimer: I have tried to make a list of organic bedding brands. If any of these do not use organic textile, I will remove them from the list. Also, since this post was related non-toxic clothing, I have not defined vegan brands separately (especially since cotton, hemp and bamboo are vegan, and their organic varieties are eco-friendly).
